On Demand - Recent Platform Updates

The following enhancements were made to the On Demand platform since its relaunch in January, 2016. With each update, we strive to improve the overall user experience and introduce new features based on customer requests and online media best practices. To suggest an enhancement or for more detailed information about any of these changes, please contact Additional updates will be added as they become available. 



Filter Improvements. (March 8, 2017)

The filters for both browse and search results were updated, including:

  • A new streamlined design for all filters.
  • All new filters are set to display as closed, with an option to expand and/or clear your selections.
  • If they choose, users can change their settings to make the expanded view the default for their account.
  • The new filters for Grade Range now allow a user to select multiple options at the same time. All other filters are single-select.




New! Social Sharing Tools. (March 8, 2017)

New options have been added under the “Share To” tab for all assets. Users can now easily share the authenticated URLs for any asset in the platform with popular sites with a single click including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Google+, and Tumblr.  These links for these new sharing tools will still require authentication in order to be able to view the content. This new option is turned off by default and must be enabled by an account administrator. To learn more about this new feature, you can read the help article.



New Feature! Playlists Are Now Searchable. (January 20, 2017)

Playlists can now be added to search results for your school or district. For playlists created before this feature was available, users can easily make them searchable by changing a setting. For new playlists, created after this January 20, 2017, users will be able to make them searchable from the start. Making a playlist searchable means that anyone in your school will be able to find it, use it, or copy and edit it for their own purposes. All searchable playlists will show up in the new "Playlists" tab on the search results. To learn more about how to make your playlists searchable, click here




Playlists Page Improvements. (January 20, 2017)

The Playlist Page has been improved to help users create and share content more easily than ever. The editing features have been streamlined to make them more intuitive, and new options will help users organize their playlists. To learn more about the updated playlist page, click here



Video Detail Page Now Offers RefWorks Citation Export (October 26, 2016)

Users can now easily export citations to RefWorks, giving them a choice between three popular citation tools: EasyBib, NoodleTools, or RefWorks. To learn more about exporting citations, click here



New Feature! Playlist Footer Link. (October 1, 2016)

Based on customer feedback, there is now a link in the footer of the platform that allows a user to enter in a playlist code. This is designed for students to input a code provided by an instructor from within the platform. The playlist code can also be entered on the login page, or accessed directly with a playlist URL. 




New Feature! Closed Captioning Options. (August 5, 2016)

Users are now able to control the way their closed captioning displays by changing their user preferences where they can set font size, font family, and font and background color. To learn more about using this new feature, click here




New Feature! Keyword Tags for all Videos. (August 5, 2016)

All video titles now include keyword “tags” that identify key concepts in the content. These can be found below the video window and users can click on any of the tags shown to see other videos that also include the same tag. This gives users another way to find content for their curriculum needs – they can now search, browse by Subject or Producer, or see videos that share specific tags. Citation Updates. (August 5, 2016)

The MLA citations have been updated to the new MLA8 format. And a new Harvard citation option is now available. Users can view these along with APA and Chicago Manual of Style format for any video. They can also set their default citation format in their user preferences. 




New Integration! Google Sign In Option Now Available. (June 23, 2016)

Google Sign In can now be turned on to allow users to access On Demand with their Google credentials. If you are a GAFE school, this provides an easy way for students and faculty to link their Google accounts with their On Demand accounts. This feature must be turned on by your account administrator before it is available for users.

New Search Results Option Added (May 13, 2016)

A new Search Results option has been added, allowing users to sort their results alphabetically by title, as well by relevance, newest to oldest, or most viewed.




New Video Disclaimers Identify Foreign Language and No Audio Content (May 13, 2016)

New video disclaimers have been added for foreign language content and content with no audio. These disclaimers automatically play at the start of any videos in either of these scenarios, helping users to know that what they are about to watch is not in English or has no audio track. These work similarly to the content warnings that play at the start of titles that may contain content that requires viewer discretion. To learn more about the content warnings, click here.





New Feature! New Continuous Play Option Added to Playlist Page (May 6, 2016)

For Playlists, a new "Continuous Play” option has been added to the Edit Playlist page. This is on On/Off switch that the playlist creator can set to force each segment in a playlist to automatically play one after the other without the user needing to do anything. This setting is located just above the new Intro Video upload area:



Search Results Filter Updated for Grades (April 22, 2016)

For all search and browse results within Classroom Video On Demand and Access Video On Demand, the Grade Level filter has been moved up to display at the top of the “Narrow Results” list. This change will help educators easily find the right content for their students by making the Grade Level filter more prominent.



New Feature! Video Introductions Can Now Be Added to Playlists (April 22, 2016)

A new Video Introduction feature for playlists allows users to add a short intro video to any playlist they create. This video is limited to 3 minutes or less (for now) and videos must be uploaded in one of the specified formats. This video intro can then be viewed by students as part of the playlist. Educators can use this new tool to provide an overview or give context for the videos in the playlist. Improvements to Search Feature Make Sorting Options "Sticky" (April 15, 2016)

When doing a search, the sort options are now “sticky” so the platform will remember the last setting a user used. This improves the workflow for users who are trying to find the perfect content to use in class. Now you can do a search, view a video from the search results, and if that content isn't what you need, return to your search results in their same sort order.



Video Detail Page Now Offers NoodleTools Citation Export (April 15, 2015)

Users can now easily export citations to NoodleTools, giving them a choice between two popular citation tools: EasyBib or NoodleTools.



Video Detail Page Now Displays Related Resource Icons (April 15, 2016)

For Resources, each type of resource is now identified with an icon (PDF or Link) to make it easier for users to know what is available (see image below)




 New Single Sign-On (SSO) Now Available (March 20, 2016)

A new version of the Single Sign-On (SSO) is now available. This new version adds the ability for user accounts to be created through the SSO integration. Existing accounts will not automatically be converted over to use the new SSO; if you are interested in the benefits of this new SSO, please contact our Support team for assistance in setting this up, or visit the Support Center to read an overview article about the new SSO.



New Feature! New Customizable Logout Option Now Available (March 20, 2016)

A new logout option is now available for accounts that wish to have users completely logout of the video platform with a single click. To activate this new option, admins will need to contact our Support team at As part of the setup, the Logout link will be set to automatically close On Demand and redirect the user back to the On Demand login page or another website of their choice.



Search by Standards Improvement Creates Better User Experience (March 20, 2016)

Search by Standards has been improved to allow users to click on a new “Back” link after searching by standards; this link retains their previous search results and allows them to continue their review of content meeting their curriculum needs. 



New Integration! New Moodle LTI Now Available (March 15, 2016)

For Moodle users, we now offer a new LTI for this LMS. After a few simple setup steps, your Moodle users will have the benefit of a fully integrated On Demand experience that will allow them to search the On Demand app, locate the content they need, and then quickly embed it into their course. New Integration! New Google Classroom Link Tool Now Available (March 15, 2016)

For Google Classroom users, a new option was added to the “Share” tools for every video. This will allow users with a Google Classroom account to share an authenticated video link directly into their account. A detailed help article can be found in the Support Center - click here to learn more. 



Video Embed Code Settings Improved for LMS Integration (March 1, 2016)

Our new embed code settings and functionality have been improved to make it easier for users to simply copy the embed code for any video or clip and use it in any Learning Management System or other online site. To learn about the three different embed code options that are available, click here.



Additional Information Added to Search and Browse Results (March 1, 2016)

All Search and Browse result lists now display additional information for each title including grade level (for Classroom Video On Demand and Access Video On Demand) and series info. This is designed to help users easily find the content they are looking for.



Generic User Names Now Respect Suppression Rules (February 21, 2016)

All generic usernames that are setup for students are now treated like students in terms of suppression rules. Any suppression rules put in place for students will be respected by the generic usernames as well. These generic users do not provide access to the MyOn Demand sections, but users can setup their own user accounts to gain access to these advanced features. 



New Integrations! New LTI Applications Now Available (February 16, 2016)

New and improved LTI applications are now available for D2L and Canvas. Once setup for your account, these LTI apps will allow users to search for and embed content from On Demand directly in their online courses. Playlists Can Now Include Additional Video Types (February 16, 2016)

The Playlist feature has been updated to now allow users to include Web Channel videos and Custom Content videos, along with the core On Demand video content. To learn more about how to create a playlist, click here to visit the Support Center.



Custom Segments from Custom Content Now Contain Embed Codes (February 16, 2016)

Custom segments created by a user now include an embed code, allowing the user to embed them in any external HTML page. Look for the Embed Code option on the "Share" tool below the video window.



New Custom Content Index Page (February 16, 2016)

For those accounts with custom content, users will now see a new option in the main menu called: Custom Content Index. Clicking on this option will take them to a new index page that lists all producers that have been setup for custom content in their specific account. Clicking on any producer will access a list of titles from that custom content producer. To learn more about how to access Custom Content, click here to view a short video tutorial. New Custom Content Advanced Search Option (February 16, 2016)

Custom Content is now also available as an option on the Advanced Search page. Users can limit their search results to only showing Custom Content titles by using this option.




Custom Content Can Now Be Added to Playlists (February 16, 2016)

Custom Content can now be added to playlists. Look for the playlist option in the "Add To" tool below the video window.



New Custom Content Videos Now Display "Related" Titles (February 16, 2016)

Custom Content titles that are part of a series now display in the "Related" section on the view video page.



Custom Content Improvements Made to Ensure Access (January 13, 2016)

Custom content improvements were made, including a global change that corrected any remaining custom content problems for legacy On Demand accounts. If anyone is still having custom content problems, please contact our Support Team at so we can look into it.



New Contextual Help Icons Provide Users With Direct Access to "How To" Articles/Videos (January 13, 2016)

Contextual help article links were added to specific features throughout the platform. Look for the question mark icon to access a help article or tutorial video specific to a feature.




Page Load Time Improves to Less Than 3 Seconds (January 10, 2016)

Additional server improvements were made to provide users of the new platform with a faster-than-ever experience with On Demand. Due to these improvements, the average page load time is now under 2.5 seconds well below the industry average recommended by Google.



New On Demand Admin Portal Has Launched! (January 8, 2016)
